Injectable Fillers

The fillers soften the look of facial lines like the “laugh lines”, “smile lines”, or “marionette lines”. The fillers are injected just below the surface of the skin to fill (or add volume) below the lines and wrinkles that are present when your face is at rest. The usual places are the folds from your nose to mouth, and your mouth to chin. Also, it is not unusual to use a filler to enhance the thickness of your lips.

Some of the most popular fillers are Restylane® and Juvéderm™. Restylane® has been approved since 2004 and Juvéderm™ since 2006 in the US. These fillers are made of a gel manufactured from a naturally occurring (non-animal derived) substance in the skin. They give an immediate smooth appearance to the skin. The procedure lasts about 15 minutes. The common side effects are bruising which lasts about 7 days, temporary redness, and firmness at the sites of the injections. Restylane® and Juvéderm™ filler results commonly last between 6 months to a year. Perlane® and Juvéderm Ultra Plus™ are the thicker agents used for deeper tissues.

The synthetic human collagens, CosmoDerm™ and CosmoPlast™, are also fillers. The FDA approved its use in 2003. These fillers are superior to older collagen dermal fillers. Their advantage is an immediate response. The CosmoDerm™ and CosmoPlast™ have an anesthetic in them, making the treatment very tolerable. The collagen lasts three to six months.

Sculptra® is a poly-L-lactic acid filler (a derivative of corn) which is used for the loss of fat volume in the cheeks. It works by stimulating your collagen production. It is not an immediate effect, but it lasts about 2 years.
